    I just had a gun action that had been ceracoated. It needed to be filed off , then papered up to 600 /800 grit, and then polished. It was only then in a fit state to be engraved.     I usually use a fine abrasive rubber lubricated with Vaseline. This method dulls the finish without destroying details.

    If you spin a small carbide bur in a turbine handpiece on the diamond wheel you can get it to a sharp point. If you then lightly drag it across the wheel holding it down at the same angle you will create a small flat on one side. This is like a 'D' bit in engineering. This should be fine enough...
