    Metalsmithing course

It sounds like you know the basics and now just need to build and practice. Talk to GRS in Emporia KS about engraving if that is a direction you want to explore, but I think that for the majority here once we have learned the basics practice practice snd more practice is the way to perfect...

Question: What 1911 to use as a canvas?

Perhaps I should share that I live in a civilized state, Arizona. Although considering that the state legislature apparently does not understand arithmetic perhaps I should question that.

Question: What 1911 to use as a canvas?

General question. For someone wanting to engrave there first hand gun and thinking of a 1911 style would a slide only be a viable choice? This should avoid the OP problem with california availability as just the slide should not be considered as a firearm as there isn’t a chamber, barrel or many...

    Dividers and Calipers

There is a jewelers tool used for marking ring sizes called "mark asizs" which would be very rigid due to its fixed size gaps the down side is b atitis fixed at 1/4 ring size increments (1/10 inch) 2.5 mmso 1/2 ring size should be 1.25 mm. If your design would allow for the cha ge it might be...

Question: Wearing Mask when sharpening gravers?

A few things to consider; 1) are you sharpening by hander power? Hand sharing would throw less dst than power. 2) what metal are you cutting? Carbon steel and tungsten carbide have different toxicity 3) are you sharpening wet or dry? A little water or oil can reduce a lot of dust 4) how much are...

    black paint?

As a jeweler I have used black model paint, it comes in nice small bottles and seems to be rather durable when in a recessed area. I have also used Rust-Oleum, but considering that it tends to be available as a spray it is less confident.

Where to buy gold wire ?

In addition to Hoover and Strong you might talk to PM West in LA. Most refiners can supply you with most karats of gold, the question is more of a matter of economics in supplying the small quantities of 24 karat as 14, 18 and 10 karat are in greater demand.

    Question: fusing gold to steel

With the proper flux, and the right working conditions gold bonds well to steel. I would suggest starting with solder flashed sheet, a relatively aggressive flux and just heat everything up untill the solder flows. However this would seriously adversely affect previous heat treatments...

    Question

What is the consensus on the Fordom K2293 flexshaft engraver? I realise that air power is preferred, but in my new job there just isn't room for a compressor, control box etc, however I do have a second hanging position for a flex shaft above the bench. And while the Lindsey unit eliminates the...

    Need some guidance

Jahn, my course syllabus lists Margret Wells as the instructor, not Rachel Wells. I am not sure if there is a relationship between the two.

Question before buying a grs airsystem

GRS lists this air compressor on there website, I would presume it would work well with there other equipment. https://www.grs.com/product/004-984-220-california-air-4610ac-22050-quiet-air-compressor-220-v/
