I've never posted to this thread but I've finally gotten what I would consider a dream set up. I couldn't do it without many many peoples help, but I must give a extra huge thank you to Tira. Now if we can just get people through the doors. Sorry for the photos they were just with my tablet

I'm in the process of designing a "stand alone" workbench for when I move my studio to a larger workspace. My sister gave me a roll top desk, but I'm not too sure it would be appropriate. I'm looking to have it in the center of the room with different workstations around it: an engraving station, a design/drafting station, a sharpening station and a stand-up engraving station for larger items such as barrels. My fine art station will be along the windows along with the computer and printers. Two walls will be floor to ceiling bookcases and display shelves for my reference books and collectables. If anyone has any ideas at all, please share them before I get too far into it to change. By the way, a fireplace is taking up one wall.

Way to go Tyler and Carlos. I'm still in the garage with plans all drawn up for an art studio out back. It just keeps getting moved lower on the list. Chances are it will never happen but it's still fun to dream. In the meantime I will drool over the studios I see here. I want to make it clear I am not coveting. I was taught young that coveting will get me in trouble with someone upstairs. Coveting is wanting what someone else has. I don't want what you have I just want one like it.

The Bible doesn't mention anything about coveting your neighbours workshop.........it's the wife, goat or camel that will get you into real trouble :)

There's nothing wrong with a bit of workshop envy :)

Cheers

I was very fortunate, not really knowing what I was doing, to set up a great bench the first time around. Same bench for about 38 years now with no desire for changing it. Some would say I am in a rut but I assure you I am in a groove!!

Andrew, you are funny...Brian, painful prospects!

Looking through this thread I was curious about something. I noticed that a lot of the work benches posted have the sharpening systems / power hones in the same area as the work area. My limited experience in engraving has led me to believe that the sharpening system should be separate. Preferably portable so that I can take it outside.
1. I don't want to be breathing in any airborne dust generated from sharpening.
2. I know that as the gravers get sharpened, Metal dust will be a byproduct left behind. My experience in welding and fabrication I know that metal dust turns to rust. I would hate to have that all over my work area. Does anyone have any feedback on this. I built my bench in the garage and i have my power hone and bench grinder on a cart. When i need to sharpen my gravers i roll it outside. Then roll it back in when I'm done. Just wondering - Rick

My sharpener is across the room. It's messy and I don't want all that sharpening dust on my engraving bench.

Big Rick This is a system I designed and built to collect all of the carbide dust.....Carbide dust will give you a heavy metal disease of the lungs if you are sensitive to it...... After using this collection system for several months, I don't notice the dust all over my bench as before...

Did you fabricate that whole hone yourself? it is a real beauty. I notice variable speed, light. What is the silver lever to the right and the extension to the left. Always looking at tools with wish in my mind Fred

Marrinan Thanks for kind words...I did a thread on the construction a while back....It is a single speed 1750 rpm, I have all the parts for a variable speed but I do not have the time right now......The lever on the right is a brake, stops the lap in 2 sec....the extension to the left is so I can rack the hood over so I can change disks with out removing the hood.....Yes this whole unit is my design and build, pretty simple.....

Atexascowboy 2011 Thank you so much....

Bob
