Hi there,

i learned engraving in Suhl/Germany and one part of our education was english scrollwork ornament. Even though i always liked this kind of ornament i never engraved it after i finished apprenticeship. Now i would like to get deeper into this kind of scrolls and therefore looking for material to study. Now i have already found out that there are different styles of this english ornament. There is one particular engraving that realy got my attention. Its a gun from Winston Churchill, see attached image. Unfortunally the image is too small to study it properly. Are there any other pictures or drawings from this style to see the details better? It seems that Sam Welch made a similar scroll design.
I have seen that the user mitch also posted 2 great looking examples of two different styles from english scrolls. But they are also very small aswell.

Now i tried to find images with google search but this type of ornament is not that common (anymore?) i guess. But it is obvious now that there are many ways to engrave english scrolls. Maybe italian engravers using it more often. But to be honest, i dont like their tiny scrolls that much.

Maybe someone of you have some larger images of different english scrolls to study? I dont want to copy and paste other peoples work, its only to get a better understanding.

A good point to start seem to be the book from Marcus Hunt. Unfortunally i always get an error if i try to visit his page. Does anybody knows if his book is still available?

I put english in quotation marks because it appears that some scrolls, even if they look somewhat identical, are not considered as english anymore. What i mean is this type in the attachment, scrolls with smal single leafes. Not the scrools with the larger spaces between the leafes.

Daniel,

Here are enlarged detail images of Churchill's English scroll on the Purdey that is shown in your link. This gun along with others by Winston G. Churchill is featured in my second book American Engravers-The 21st Century.

By the way, when did you study at the Berufsfachschule für Büchsenmacher und Graveure in Suhl ? The school has a copy of my book.

Thank you all for your answers!

Great thanks to you Roger, for the better images. Would it be possible to get them in higer resolution per pm or mail? This engraving is a fantastic work!

I studied from 2004-2007. I cant remember seeing your book there. The only book i can remember was the british gun engraving by Tate. I looked at it almost every day. Is your book available anytime again? I found a page that says it is out of stock at the moment but available again at end of may.

Did you get an error too when visit the page from Marcus Hunt?

While not that specific engraver, for examples you might find it useful to browse past catalogs at Holts auctioneers on line. In some cases in their standard bidding auctions they have very high resolution images that you can zoom in on to the point where you can see individual cuts.

Send your e-mail address in a PM.
I visited the school in 2011. There are two copies there.
I have not tried to access Marcus Hunt's site.
