Pendant kit by Sam

NOTE: Some design transfer experience is highly recommended. For optimum results you should have an inkjet or laser printer which is capable of copying these design sheets and producing acceptable transfers. The designs are printed on paper and can be transferred to the metal with acetone, although I recommend that you make copies of the sheets and keep the originals as masters. Inkjet users can scan or copy the sheets and transfer using their preferred method.

Six heavy brass pendants/key fobs, 1.25″ x .050″ (32mm x 1.4mm) and design sheets for basic, intermediate, and advanced engravers. Includes a beautiful rosette, flowing leafy scroll, complex arabesque, tight English scroll, beautiful McKenzie scroll, and a complex grotesque face design. The kit also includes a 20 page booklet of engraving suggestions and helpful tips with closeup illustrations of detail and shading.

BONUS DESIGNS: I added two more designs for a total of 8. One of America’s more important engraving artists was L.D. Nimschke who worked from 1850 to 1900. His work is worth of study and the included Nimschke scroll design will give you a taste of cutting his bold and beautiful style. The Circle Monograms design sheet is fairly advanced and allows you to create 3-initial circle monograms. Each letter is shown in the left, center, and right positions, and a double-leaf border at the top finishes it off nicely. This can be a moneymaker.

Purchasers may engrave the discs and sell them or gift them. They make great gifts and are a good way to introduce your engraving skills to the marketplace. Sell one or two and the kit pays for itself.

Seems like a very reasonable price for a set of expertly designed, and well made practice plates from one of the great grand masters of the engraving world, Sam! That and a license to sell the work?! Christ almighty!!! These should be flying off the shelves.

Lately I find I'm having less and less opportunity to just sit down and practice, but as a designer and perpetual student always looking to expand my artistic reach, I love the concept of a product line which allows the purchaser to work through, incrementally, from beginning designs, to to expert level, and sell the work along the way to pay for the time an materials.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but this is both a stroke of genius, and and an incredibly (with emphasis!) generous opportunity for anyone learning hand engraving.

You've provided a means for learning, physical practice pieces and templates for creating quality work in various styles, an introduction and hands on guide to pricing, and license for marketing the work in a single package - all for less than $100.

It took awhile before I got the nerve to try one... gotta start somewhere haha. I’d highly recommend this kit to anyone looking to challenge themselves to step outside whatever comfort zone they’ve nestled into.

I know this isn't a critique post, but...even though from a beginner like yourself...a small tip to make it look ever so slightly tidier.
When doing a checkered background...try to keep everything going in the same direction. It will have a completely different look for sure.

Looking good nonetheless...

If you haven't worked through Sam Alfano's advanced shading video, the options in that video will really make these medallions pop.

I was hesitant to try the checkered background as it was my first and quickly realized trying to eyeball the subsequent areas into being parallel was an exercise in futility... lesson learned and this has given me the final nudge to order a proper stippling handle as the electric one I use on small pieces would have butchered this as well haha. Thanks for the advice

Unfortunately that is one of the videos I currently lack, that and flare cutting have seemed beyond me till recently. Thanks. I inked the piece it looks a tad cleaner.

If you are interested in a great looking, single-pass lined background, Brian Powley showed his very interesting background method in a YouTube video taken a few years ago at Scott Pilkington's Engrave-In. The first part of the video is on inlaying gold; the background discussion comes later.

Just ordered mine! Can’t wait.

Hello gentlemen, been a while since I’ve posted but have been rather busy practicing. I’ve gotten a few more commissions doing for aircraft placard registration number plates in highly visible areas. Anyways I found after spending 10+ hours trying to duplicate Sams designs for these pendants, knocking out a few letters on stainless steel felt 10X easier. Also before doing this piece My Sam advance shading vide arrived and Ill have to say I dont believe I’d have even a vague understanding of where shade lines belong and why. Much appreciated to Sam and all others for sharing years of knowledge and wisdom.

Looks like another great leaning tool from the Alfano learning center. Plus great little items to sell.
