Hello everyone,
I'm new to engraving, and designing everything involved with engraving. The reason I got some interest in engraving to start with is I'm building my second flintlock gun and I thought it would be nice to have it be a little more fancy than the first one I built. I've been buying books and doing research and practicing as much as I can. What I'm curious about is if there's any suggestions on engraving work to practice? Is there any practice designs for beginners to try to cut?

good thing to get started on. check out a copy of the schippers book. such will give you quite valuable insight into the world you're about to enter.

I would suggest Sam Alfano's Beginners Course in Modern Hand Engraving. It comes with printable practice templates all designed for the beginner.

monk is right the schippers book is a good start for what you want to do. the component nature of muzzleloaders is a good way to start. if you screw something up just make that piece disappear. the pencil is still the best way to learn engraving keep trying till you get something you like then cut it repeat a few hundred times and you will be on your way good luck

You want the book by John Schippers on muzzleloading engraving. Not the Schippers book on the Clinton impeachment.

Sam’s beginner’s course DVD does a great job, giving one the perspective of what I’m sure 30 years ago would only be seen by an apprentice cautiously observing over the shoulder of a master. Hope you enjoy your journey, which only boundary seems to be time itself. BB
