welcome to the forum. to answer yer question--i think the knife graver is a poor start. i would first use a 90. 45 face, 15 heel for lift. you did not mention that you had a pencil. learning to draw and design well is just as important as learning to use the variety of gravers you have.

welcome to the forum. this place is helpful. all one need do is "look it up" or ask. dont forgt to develop a strong relatiionship with a pencil and drawing pad. roger bleile created a glossarY of terms for engravers. it may answer some of yer questions.
get yerself a decent sharpening system. the crocker tool is not capable of producing repeatable geometry . you should also learn to design and draw well. good luck in your pursuits.
make sure the retaining set screws are properly tightened. if not, that could possibly contribute to the drift. check the heels under the scope. as others said, that's likely the cause.
there's much to be learned here. many disciplines to master. design concepts, drawing with a common pencil, tool sharpening, just to mention a few. everyone here will help those that seek such. if you misbehave, you'll have to stay after class and clean the blackboard !
very nice looking work. engraving on the front stuffers is my very favorite form of engraving. it was a joy working with the various makers to establish just what was wanted on each gun.
