Sweet!
Thanks for the info!
Soooo.. I did get a GRS 120 Degree graver C-max and tried to use it on the same project. AND, it did the same thing; shatter after only a few seconds of cutting. So, as the above suggestions have stated, I started to look at different reasons as to why my gravers...
I'm not sure. I haven't had the opportunity to try it again as I'm just playing with what I can cut and what I "want to cut". Most of the higher end knives have a coating over the steel handles that make them really tough. Further, biting through this coating seems to destroy the graver, which...
While I am far from being an expert, I do have a little background in art and design, which has helped me immensely turning to the engraving world. Although the media is very different then Pen & Ink ( what I still do ) or painting, the principles are the same. Light direction is important in...
Hey All
Hope your day is going swimmingly!
Question: I'm sure someone has attempted and has been successful at engraving titanium. I would like to attempt this as well but I'm not sure of the basics, ie: PSI, graver selection, oscillation speeds, etc.
If anyone would like to give an old/new guy...
Hey All
Quick update on my Hardened steel project ( Kershaw Gravel Knife Scale )
So after much horsing around with different settings, gravers and all around tom-foolery, I settled on the HSS 120 degree graver I ground myself. The nice thing is, the graver told me when I needed to sharpen it...
Hey Leland
Thanks for the tip about Annealing the scale. This was going to be my next experiment since, I'm sure, hardening the scales is done with some type of quenching. This is a small Kershaw Gravel, I believe it has the same finish as the Leek. I have sanded the finish off but I'm still...
That is Super Helpful! Thanks so much!
I was always taught to do this on HSS tooling for the machine shop but, I never thought about doing it to the carbide gravers in this application. I've also been using Thermalock material to hold my work so, I don't think its a vibration issue, but I'll...
If it was the blade, I could understand that. Kershaw uses quality materials for their knife blades. I talking engraving the scales! ( handle ). Incredibly tough.
Thanks for the help guys.
As it turns out, I was trying to inlay the wire with a Pneumatic tool (like the pros) with no luck. I went and got a brass punch set and it changed everything! After chiseling a groove into the sidewalls, I smacked the wire into place with the punch and "WAH LA!"...
Hey All!
Hope everyone is doing well.
Have a few questions about engraving into Harder materials such as Blade steels, Alloys and just weird stuff that manufacturers are using for knives.
#1 ( and I should preface this by stating that I am among the growing population that has gone the...
I'm just starting my inlay journey, and I have had 0% results so far. Purchased "Dead Soft" copper wire, 18g with a .75mm engraved groove. Trying to estimate the depth has been the trick. Any suggestions for this? I have tried raised teeth in the bed but, it seems the cooper isn't that...
Hey Ron
Checking in and found this post today. A few questions:
1. What do you see as a price point for a 5 day class?
2. When are you thinking?
3. What's included?
4. And lastly, What type of engraving will be covered? ( ie: Western, Classic, Black leaf, inlay, etc. )
Thanks for the help.
Tim
Oh. That's a cool idea!
I'll have to try that.
This was a practice plate from today.
Need to really start concentrating on my shadow work ( or lack of ) LOL!
Thanks for the help
Tim
Thanks Monk!
I use an iPad with Procreate and it seems to be a great resource for me. ( I'm a gadget freak). And I do appreciate the direction. I guess I have a super interesting in the Black leaf style. However I know that a traditional scroll workspace is needed to really get the basics to...
Hey everybody!
I've been an artist for a long while, dealing mainly with Pen & Ink drawing on watercolor paper. In my professional career, I'm a machinist / manufacturing engineer in the aerospace and rocket industries, and have recently retired ( at 62 ).
I've been trying to find another hobby...
