    Smith Wesson 39-2 slide

Hi Kent as a rookie I'm asking questions before I embark on a job. If you'd like to elaborate on skills I'm missing I'm all ears. I've cut plenty of other types of things including knives and fine jewelry. The job is for a small portion of the slide which seems reasonable. We all have to...

    Engraved My First Firearm

Nicely done. Beautiful work. I agree with Monk that the shading could provide a bit more contrast but the overall design and cutting is top notch. Really nice use of empty space in the composition. I'm about to embark on designing and cutting my first slide and this is inspiring to say the...

    Smith Wesson 39-2 slide

Thanks for the reply JJ. Yeah looks like I'll be making a test cut. Seen plenty of these factory engraved and also aftermarket engraved so hoping for the best. I'm only in possesion of the slide, any suggestions where I should make a test cut?

    Smith Wesson 39-2 slide

Hi All, I've got a customer who would like his 1972 Smith & Wesson 39-2 slide engraved. Factory specs suggest it is carbon steel but that's all I've got to go on. Before I start working on a design I'm wondering how the steel will cut and if this is a feasible job. If it has any bearing it...

Have you worked with fine silver? What has your experience been?

Fine silver is really soft, even sterling which is considerably harder can be challenging to engrave. Going back to some mild steel always feels like a dream. Pneumatic might allow you to focus on controlling the graver more than pushing it but hand push is a good skill to have regardless.

    eBay Lindsay vise for sale

Thanks for the heads up! Indeed the Lindsay tools are seemingly impossible to buy. I have pretty much given up on ever owning one of his vices. Was trying to hold out for the new turntable but folded and got the GRS satellite stand/turntable. Honestly couldn't be happier with the GRS...

    Pendant, Practice gold inlay

Ah that bee is really nice. Totally understand feeling the urge to cut a fun design that might not be the most original. All told I think you did a really nice rendition. Will surely be a top tier birthday gift. Cheers!

    Cheap practice plates

YMMV but if you're looking for something a little different onlinemetals.com will sell you 2x2 plates (or whatever dimension you want) in mild steel or brass or copper or what have you. I recently bought a bunch of brass plates to work on stone setting/pavé and they were about 5 bucks each for...

    Newbie Vise question

Wow! I feel a bit silly but your reply made me question if something was wrong with my ergonomics and I've figured it out. My light source was slightly behind me on my left side and I engrave with my left hand leaving a shadow on the bits of work I'm trying to see when the piece is sitting...

    Newbie Vise question

Hi all! New here, I'm a hobbyist jeweler who started engraving this year and I'm using a grs microblock and a #4 optivisor. I find myself tilting the vise to odd/extreme angles often while cutting. I know some of this is to allow me to see whats being cut but I'm not sure that its a great...
