So now, with auto-pay cancelled, (sorry to see that option disappear, but I understand), what is the correct, or preferred method of supporting the Engraver's Cafe' ?
Thanks, Monk. The tolerances are awesomely tight. While in the process of cleaning up some surface rust etc. I used micrometer and Starrett feeler gagues to check the fit, in many instances, the separation of parts is 1.5-3 thousandths... close tolerances for a vise! The gap between the two...
"...do you know john widgren?"
Yes. Very early on, Widgren was a "sometimes" student of mine. He's a really fine player (as well as being a great guy and an Emmon's set-up, restore wizard). Just to give you an idea...I had him substitute for me on Broadway in Paul Simon's show: The Capeman. On...
Thank you so much for looking into this for me, John B. I'm sort of a nerd and I love knowing all the history of any tool or other nice thing that comes into my possession.
I worked for a whole lot of folks: Dottie West, Paul Simon, Arlo Guthrie, to name a couple of the better-known folks. Early on (Early '70's) I used a Marlen S-10. In '78, I had an Emmons D-10 built for me that I still have and play to this day. At one point, another Emmons D-10...I was doing a...
First off... I cannot be trusted. I promised myself that I was not going to buy any more vises...then this one came along.
It is an absolute monster...60 pounds, has jaws that open to 5.75", and the donut it a perfectly machined piece of bronze. Also, the jaws travel through 3 separate ways. I...
I adopted that squirrel when he was just a pup. He was an orphan. His parents had gotten into some discarded, radioactive material, which eventually killed them. Feeling sorry for him, I decided to raise him as one of my own offspring, owing to the uncanny resemblance that he bears to me.
I found this on the Archive. org website. It is a compendium of various ornate alphabets and ornamental devices that was published in 1914. There is some wonderful, idea provoking stuff in here.

I agree, Monk. I love it as a piece of art, the dividend is that it's also a good vise. I don't intend to use it much (if at all)... I simply loved so many aspects about it that I had to bite the bullet and buy it. Whoever the previous owner was that engraved this vise, obviously loved it and...
Ed: To your question; " Did I get it for a good price", I'd say that I got it for a fair price as a used block. In terms of it's value to me as a wonderful piece of engraving history and a lovely piece of art, I'd say that I just about stole it.
Howdy friends and neighbors. I just posted this request for info on a Facebook engraver forum, I'm also posting here as I'm hoping that someone might be able to identify the maker, (or former owner), of this lovely, vintage ball vise that I just bought. In addition to its ornamentation...
Would someone be kind enough to show a close-up tip of a dubbed graver. I've read a bunch of descriptions of HOW it's done, (and I'm sure that I'm being really dense), but I'm just not getting what is meant in a way that I can visualize what that looks like.
Oh, mdengraver.... So YOU"RE the one who dreamed up that awful NDB approach for Runway 18 (One-Eight) at OXC!! It's been decommissioned, but it was a pain in the butt! I always wondered who the sadistic folks were that designed some of those approaches, but then again, I'm still here to talk...
