Very sad news. So sorry to hear.
I met Tom in 1982. We served together in the same Army unit in Korea and shared a house for several months. Among his other attributes, Tom was a great cook.
I like the "old", but the "H" over powers the lower case letters. Maybe make the "H" a little less bold and add some curvature like the lower case letters.
I have the same problem when using a microscope. I do better positioning the graver with an Optivisor, but it's hard to see the lines due to my poor vision.

Can you provide a list of materials that are used? For example, is the clear tape special, and what is the fluid that you apply to the surface? Do you use an inkjet or a laser printer?
Here is the manual for the model without a reversible motor. You didn't say which one you have.

The reversible model has a capacitor which could be defective. I don't see one in the other model diagrams.
A little bit of oil, per instructions in the manual, is a good idea. Not sure if this will solve the problem, but the motor is supposed to be oiled regularly.
