Beginner struggling with burrs

Hi all, I’ve recently been trying to engrave a couple of scrolls into some copper using a square graver. I’m not sure if my technique is off or if my graver geometry might be the issue, but my cut lines always seem to have burrs on either side of the cut. I was wondering if anyone had any tips to try and stop this happening? I will attach a photo below, I know there’s a lot to learn so I appreciate any help thank you :)

Your intuition seems correct, the graver geometry is probably a bit off. Can you tell us a bit more about what your doing? Is this hand push/pneumatic/hammer and chisel? What are you using to sharpen your tools? Have you figured out how to put a proper heel on the square graver? Watch some videos on sharpening and invest in a way to make your tools consistently sharp. Sharp tools are much safer than dull ones! The graver should cut away metal cleanly and only leave a burr at the tip of the cutting edge that gets flicked out at the end of your cut. Sorry for all the questions but it might help us figure out what's going on. Cheers!

Hi thank you for replying, I’m doing hand push, using a 800 and 1200 diamond stone to sharpen. I changed my geometry today as when I looked I think my face angle was off, I also then tried to do a standard heel instead of a parallel which is what I had been using before, this seemed to help and the cuts today were cleaner. Saving up for a sharpening fixture :)

I could be off, thinking that someplace in this forum or the Lindsay forum buried deep in the archives I have read that the parallel heel is not the best for hand push engraving

yer heel on a square should be very short for doing curves. heel length on straight cuts doesn't matter. the heel should be barely visible
