Normally steel. of one sort or another, seems to work best, if only because of the application. Bulino is more fragile and susceptable to wear than most engraving, so on most jewelry applications it would wear away too fast. That is why most bulino is done on firearms and knives.

That being said, Katherine Plumer has done some magnificent bulino engravings in gold, usually to be worn as a pendant. There are others as well, she is just the freshest in my mind.

stainless is excellent

banknote can be done really nicely in copper

gold is much more difficult to render in 3d
