Cirelli's Transfer solution

Mike, will Ronson lighter fluid work? I stopped at 6 places today and no Zippo fluid in sight! One place had countertop display of Zippo lighters but no fluid.

I do not know if the Ronson fluid will work (the zippo fluid works great) but I had the same problem as you in finding the zippo fluid. I finally found it at a cigar/pipe store. Some other friends had the same experience. Hope this helps.

Tim never tried it but it's probably the same stuff. Zippo uses a synthetic formula.

Yes it works - that's what I'm using myself. All you're really doing is thinning the damar varnish with something that dries very quickly so you can get a thin, fast-drying layer.

Hi Tim - I bought a small bottle of model paint thinner at the local craft store, poured about 1/4 of it out and mixed in a little damar - cant say exactly how much just a few drops, my varnish is probably 20 years old and is as thick as honey now - sort of trial and error. Swab it on (just a thin coat) with a Q-tip and let it dry until it is fairly dry to the touch, just a seconds, maybe 30 or so, in warm weather. I have a cheap HP Deskjet D1420 from WalMart - think it cost just over $30 - I have tried several transparency brands but the Epson ink jet transparencies do the best. I have also thinned the damar with some epoxy paint thinner and it works too. Hope this helps and all is well - Fred

I've mixed a capful of damar varnish into small bottle of common rubbing alcohol and it makes an excellent transfer solution. It does get a bit milky and the varnish settles to the bottom. It works perfectly though. If you can't find the stuff for Mike's brew you might try alcohol.

Thanks all for the help!! I am experimenting with adding a small amount of white pigment to a solution so it dulls a polished metal surface a bit and lets you draw with pencil on it. The most important thing is durability after the transfer. Tom whites solution seems to get gummy and smudges after your fingers rub over it while cutting the design.

"cirelli sauce". as i call it, will work with ronson. and adding a white pigment will improve visibility. i got brave, and also added a dash and a half of white powdered tempera to the sauce. the addition of the tempera powder allows one to draw on it with pencil. it doesn't hold up to fingering well, but i'm going to search for a cure for that next ! i'm thinkin maybe half a dash of sams' magic balding wax might do the trick !!!!!!!!!!

Tim, I use Tom Whites mix,which I believe is damar varnish and 97% alcohol. And as long as you keep it thin it will not get gummy, I have been using the same bottle for about 3 years but add a small amount every so often to thin it out, being you lose some of the alcohol everytime you open the bottle. It does rub off though, so to prevent that, I spray AquaNet on it, after the tranfer. Do not touch it until it is dry or you will smudge the design, but it puts down a durable protective layer and does dull down a high finish. -Brian

I've never had a problem with Tom White's "Transfer Magic". Just give it a light spray with Aquanet hair spray or any artist's charcoal or pencil fixative. Then it will take considerable abuse.

Tim this is whats in Zippo, Synthetic Isoparaffinic Hydrocarbon. You can also desolve some violin bow rosin in the fluid and it works pretty good, but the damar works good for me. What seems to work good for me is after it's mixed let the damar settle down to the bottom and only use the clear liquid. I think if you do it that way you may not have to be so critical (80/20, 75/25, 90/10) with the measuring. I haven't monkeyed with this for a while. I have some mixed and haven't mixed any since.

Tim, I am talking about just the alcohol and its water content, rubbing alcohol is 70%, with 30% water and then there is isopropyl alcohol which can be found in 91% and 97%, they flash off faster being they have less water.

I wanted to try Mike formula and I had a small bottle of Damar Varnish. I used Ronsonal lighter fluid, in a 20/80 mix. Works fine with the Epson and the Epson transparency.
I wanted to get some more Damars, so I looked it up.
