A personal .22 Rifle, Stevens Favorite. Here is my latest engraving attempt. Feel free to offer critique. Design and execution is challenging to me ,but here is when I am at present. Given the high level of work I see by members here sorta hard to post, but maybe other beginners will post theirs for guidance.

I like the overall design on this and the balance seems correct to my eye.

Am curious as to the size of the background punch used

The beading punch came from PMC supplies package says “Bead 0020”. Been long enough don’t remember think it’s .5 mm.

It a good size. I might try a bit smaller set in the future. A package was pretty cheap. Seems under $20 shipped for 6 punches.

I personally feel that it is about right as the contrast is very good.

I like your Stevens the design looks like it should be there. The only critique would be to go back and cut the outlines away from the background. You did an great job on the punch dots but there sure is a lot of them maybe more scroll less background next time. You have progressed a lot since I met you keep at it.

Nice Job! Always love scroll work on guns. And steel is one of those materials that is fairly forgiving. Keep it going!

Thanks! More scrolls would cut back on the backgrounding for sure. I use my micro scope see to punch the dots. I don’t see well enough to do it without it. The tap tap tapping seems to disturb my wife. If I stop posting it probably cause she made one big tap of her own. Lol

I am not an engraver but would like to be. But I love this stuff. I really like the design. To me you must have done the right side first as the scrolls are not as smooth, a few flat spots. The left side is nicely done. I would be satisfied if I was that good. Looks like you have a future.

Hi Will

thanks for the encouragement. Hope you give it a try yourself. Can start with a few hand gravers, practice metal and most importantly pencil and paper. It’s easy to be intimidated and awe struck by a lot of the work we see here. Part of the reason I post some of my work (as a sorta beginner) is to encourage other newcomers to engraving to show theirs. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience with members here. A lot of thoughtful guidance can be obtained here. Tactful advice from those who remember what it’s like in the beginning. So far no one has told me I shouldn’t decorate a cake. They might be thinking that, but don’t say it. lol.

in the land of Scrolls,
Looks like you are learning lots and getting some real cutting done. There is a lot I could say but I think for now I would give you the advice to bring the scroll outlines of your main body scrolls all the way out to your borders. This will give you less background to deal with as others have pointed out and more importantly make the scroll look like it was designed for the shape , not just vague scrolls in the middle of the pattern.
Keep it up
Scott
