I found this in the Rock Island Auction newsletter. https://www.rockislandauction.com/d...medium=email&utm_term=0_-f6f90a28ba-148843321

This is supposed to be factory engraved. One can zoom in on the photos for a closer look. Note the perpendicular cross hatched shading. Also note the inside of the tight curves of the scrolls. It looks like a lot of chatter unless this was intentional. Some scrolls don't seem to be smooth at least to me.

Your opinions?

in the land of Scrolls,
it looks like legit Rennasaince engraving to me.
I've restored/recut several of these from the "salt days"
the most interesting thing to me about this was the provenance....... from Frank Brownells collection.......

Funny, i hadnt even noticed what you were calling chatter until you mentioned it.
Its not extreeme chatter like it would be if it was cut in the Suhl way of engraving style, but I can see what you are talking about . So yes, thats normal for the way the Belgiums sharpen thier heels.

Thanks Scott. Always something new to learn.
Chatter is sort of a machinist term for not getting a smooth cut when your end mill is getting dull.
