... Do you always have to use square silver wire for wood inlay? Would round wire also work for this? ...

In all inlays have a principle: the soft material adjusts to the hard material. In addition the hard material set and protects the line a clean.

In inlay "metal to metal" the base is more rigid of the embedded material. In inlay "metal to wood" the roles are reversed. It requires the use of this square metal wire for the inlay.

Of course, there are other approaches.
The first thing comes to my mind- inlay in very hard woods (such as African woods ) and bone.
