junk or ok for beginners graving vices on e-bay

i have been looking at purchasing a ball vice for some bulino and scrimshaw work, now does anyone know if the gravers ball vice that you see on e-bay are acceptable for such work or are they just junk

Neither bulino or scrimshaw require that the vise rotate so you could make your own out of a bowling ball easy enough. Or since the jaw function and tilt function are all you want anyway, who cares if the vise doesn't rotate smoothly

maybe not needed, but---- if the vises are grs, or made in the usa they will be fine. the victor, made in japan is also good.

You might also consider the OmniVise for bulino and scrimshaw. It's a small portable vise with either a screw down base or a vacuum base. I screwed mine to a piece of 2x12 for added stability. The vise tilts and rotates and is inexpensive.
