Just finished this little.31 blackpowder derringer and added embellishment to the mold. Hopefully have improved a bit since last post. Far from perfect. Feel free to offer advice. Thanks.

ror a gun of that era it looks ok to me. did you direct draw, or use a transfer? some of the spines could be a bit better.

I drew the design on the pistol. Very fine marker to try layout, rub off with finger if not to liking. Hammer and chisel to cut scrolls. I know what you mean by the spines. Struggle with consistency when repositioning the work to continue the scroll. I can see where air graver has an advantage to move the work while cutting. If I had three hands would be quite a bit easier. However probably need to concentrate and focus more in the transition areas.

u r correct. i started disastrously with h&c. my cuts were much improved with the use of the gravermeister. the ball vise was also a major help.

I do use ball vise, but not having a third hand to rotate it while cutting is a disadvantage. I can see why some Europeans stand and walk around the thing being engraved. Perhaps a base that could be rotated by foot while H & C cutting would be the answer. Could be wrong but recall Leland had built and used such a contraption.

you are correct I did build a foot controlled bench I still use it at shows for demonstrations. It is not to big a job. I can send photo of what I did if you are interested. A heavy post vise you can walk around works good too.

Thanks believe you were using that bench when we met at the muzzle loader convention at Kearney years ago. Handy item, but have no place to put it if I made one.
