Hello all,

I am a complete newbie looking for some advise. We need to make some simple name tags for the disks on pet collars.

The catch is that we need the engraving to be as quiet as possible.

We don't mind paying extra for the quietest tool we can get, so we are open to any ideas you may have.

It may even be that a machine of some other type (not hand held) would be quieter and maybe give better and quicker results. I really know nothing about the technology and would love to hear your thoughts.

We are based in the UK if that limits the tools available at all. Although we could always import.

Thanks for your time
Damian

Damian,

It sounds like a Gravograph manual pantograph is best suited to your needs. These machines are sold worldwide. They are easy to learn and use. While they are limited to doing lettering which looks machine done it sounds like that is fine for your needs. The model that works with a diamond stylus is completely silent. This is a web link to the manufacturer: http://www.gravograph.com/usa/Engraving Machines/IM3.php

This web site is dedicated to freehand engraving which is mainly done with a graver. While true engraved lettering is far more attractive than machine done, the time and effort need to learn such a demanding skill may not justify the results to be put on a dog tag.

I hope this answers your question,

CRB

I have to agree with Roger on this one. If you don't want to put the time and effort into learning hand engraving the pantograph is the way to go. Here are a couple of UK links

http://www.gravograph.co.uk/Engraving Machines/Mechanical_Engraving.php

If you want a better quality but more expensive machine, here's a Roland supplier:

If you want to be really quiet and have some time to learn, hand pushing is silent..... except perhaps when you stab yourself "F^@*!!!!!"

Thanks for the feedback!

I'll look into those products and see what will work best for us.

Thanks again
