Hi everyone, new member here

I recently inherited a full engraving setup from my father and I'm trying to figure out what I've got and how to use it.

The main unit is a Qiangzuan QZ60S micromotor with two handpieces, a foot pedal, and a handmade water-cooling system. There's also a large collection of burs — dental diamond burs in a binder, a box of what looks like various diamond burs for rotary work, and polishing stones and rubber abrasives.

My father used this primarily for glass engraving. I'm a complete beginner myself, but I'd like to start with something simple — engraving a letter on a small metal tag (cat ID tag, soft metal, probably brass or zinc alloy).

A few questions to start:

  • How one approaches such a hobby in general?
  • Are dental diamond burs suitable for metal, or should I stick to specific rotary burs?
  • Any tips on speed settings for soft metal with this type of micromotor?
  • Is there anything in the setup I should know about before I start?
Photos attached. Happy to take more if anything needs a closer look.

Thanks for having me.

Welcome Tars, looks like there some youtube videos on glass rotary engraving. If you wish to dip your toes into some metal cutting you may end up buying just a few more tools and Gravers. Most of these fellows use rotary bits strictly for background removal. Hope you have a good one. BB
