I just got lindsay push handles... straight and canted. do you sharpen differently using the canted one leaning up or down for bulino dots?

Nice work! However the mouth on the right side seems a little off. Needs a slight upward curve to it. The one in your first drawing with color seems about right. To me this stands out as the eye is drawn to this area as the center of attention. My opinion.

I just used some 3000 grit on this but I feel if I knock it back to 1000 it will be easier to see. what would you do?

Maybe daub it with Plasticine (an oil-based modeling clay). It will leave a slightly greasy surface & will knock back reflection. Also, you can make a pounce bag filled with baby powder and it will smooth out the greasy surface with a matte white one.

I am curious if anyone can give me any pointers on where I'm going wrong. I did a 9ct pendant the other day and every chip flicked away effortlessly. in 925 I'm creating a cheese grater. how do I flick my bulino chips in 925 better?

Hi Dani,
The issue might be the relative softness of the 925. A number of sterling alloys can be made harder with a heat treatment, surprisingly. There are different "recipes" for different alloys, and some won't harden. One I've used recommends 600 degrees F for 1 hour. You might check with your metal supplier to see if your alloy falls into a hardenable category. If your metal supplier is not a refiner, they should be able to contact the refiner from whom they are supplied to find out the particulars.
I know this doesn't directly answer your question, and I don't have any suggestion to make the flicking out better, but hardening might offer a solution. I had an order for a number of engraved collar stays for grooms-men's gifts and the stock wasn't available in a hard temper. I'd read about the hardening process, tried it out and it worked a treat. Popped them into my kiln and they were noticeably stiffer after treating and much more suitable for their purpose.

Best regards,
Doug
