Mitch must be an expert on bear survival as many bears as he gets in his yard.

There are a %$#&load of bears in the Asheville area and my house is right on the boundary between two neighborhoods with a busy-ish street behind me. Mine is the only unfenced backyard on the block and it's right by the access into the other neighborhood, so over the years the wildlife- bears, deer, the local turkey flock, etc. -have learned they can cut thru my yard to migrate between the two developments.

As for survival tips, everybody just pretty much leaves them alone, gives 'em a little space, and we all get along just fine.
