It's a pitty none of the "beginners" show their practice plates. I don't mind showing as I feel that just reading and watching every video I can find will not do anything for you untill you try and show what you have created. Nothing is more valuable than someone pointing out your mistakes and pointing you in the right direction.

Sometimes one might feel overwhelmed by the art created by others, but remember that also took years of mistakes and setbacks.

Oniemarc, Lot`s of practice plates in older post in this forum. Remember that Sam had a few treads about "shading practice". You will probably find if you search....

Jørn-Ove
I was referring to the OP asking what everyone is working on on the bench...practice plates and such....both beginners and pros so to speak.
It seems like alot of the newer people are hesitent to show what they are working on...even though I feel it will only help you...

I am working my way through all the older posts, slowly but surely. I'll take every bit of advice I can find and usefull to me...no worries there.

Well I for one do enjoy looking at recent creations and attempts. I still learn from them. Just looking up old threads does not keep you current with anyone new, new visions and all of us "olde phartes. "
Let the party continue with the ones who want to come and the others...EHHH !

In this case I would say "seasoned" hahaha...age is just a number which doesn't equal experienced in a specific field...in this case engraving. The older posts are great to look at and learn btw. So...I read the old and new...

If I can pour anyone a whiskey or beer...

Not much of a party guy...hahaha.
Sadly, the Cafe is a mere shadow of its former self. You didn't just miss the old threads on our early attempts at cutting metal, but in the Cafe's heyday there might be over a hundred posts from a few dozen members in a single day (complete with some heated arguments!). This was THE online forum for engraving on the planet. Facebook, Instagram, etc, have drained away almost all but us "olde phartes", as Marty put it, maybe because we're barely able to use a computer, let alone figure out modern social media sites...

There is an art to good chocolate milk.
Yes there is. I'm a Hershey's syrup fan, no offense to the Nestle's Quikkers (even tho you're WRONG). It's also my favorite way to use one or two overripe bananas. I mix 'em in with a stick blender, put it in the freezer for a few hours until it's pretty slushy, then blend it again. It tastes like a decadent milkshake, but it's actually pretty healthy.

Well, the cafe has something that the major sites don’t have, the people with the cahones to say what they think instead of just empty compliments. So please don’t stop being old farts, it’s still a breath of fresh air to some.
Yessir...I see a good mix of people trying to keep us newcomers motivated and those who are and can be blunt enough to keep us on our toes. Strive for improvement.

I did finish the round design today...so I might aswell show the endresult. As predicted, I messed up here and there...ahum.
Here's a short list of what I know I did wrong...
Border needed to be shaded further
I messed up some of the shading lines which result in a somewhat messy look.
Background removal is simply so so.
I think I could have gone slightly darker with the shading, but I was concentrating on getting thin lines....lesson learned(not always a good thing)

Overall I see alot of improvement over my last plate and am pretty pleased with the outcome. Not satisfied by a long shot, but as long as I'm improving....I'm well happy 20210619_173322.jpg

Well, in the 11 years that I have been a goldsmith I never feel completely satisfied with a job, I have that feeling that I could have done some things differently, my goldsmith teacher always told me that this is good, a sign that you are growing It is bad to believe that you no longer have anything to learn. As for the engraving, I'm still a baby, I don't have a teacher, my learning is being self-taught and my teachers are all of you, keep cutting brother, demanding a lot, don't waste time and above all, Enjoy it to the fullest.

I don't do "modern social media" myself. I do like to read the old posts , not sure you can even do that on Facebook don't know never had an account. I don't have any thing to show still trying to get to the 2mm ring on Sam's fiends torcher sorry I mean practice plates . Relearning to draw and taming my engraver keeps me busy right now. The cost of wood and steel is so high right now I am not sure if I will see any work in ornamental ironwork for a long time. I don't ever want to go back to my dental lab job. Thank you Sam , Monk and every one on this site.

I am like that...never satisied...or at least fully satisfied. I truly believe that that is a good thing.
Allthough I don't expect to ever be as good at engraving as some of the peeps here...I do want to keep pushing myself...be as good as I can be.

Never stop learning eh
