    Graver Geometry - Color Lines?

You are way overthinking the whole deal with cuts. Here’s the basics. Wider gravers…………Cut wider lines Narrow gravers ………cut narrow lines. You can alter the above by cutting deeper or shallower or by leaning the graver onto its side (often called rolling the graver) When shading…….lines...

    Tom Turpin

That is sad news indeed I always enjoyed talking with Tom at the FEGA show. He will be missed by many. His books are now collectors items and what he didn't know about custom guns wasn't worth knowing. The gun world has lost a real treasure Rest In Peace, Tom.

    Rod Cameron: an appreciation

That is very sad news indeed. I have very fond memories of Rod. He came to New Zealand many years ago with his friend and they visited with us for an afternoon. A couple of years later Kathleen and Rod hosted us in Mendocino and we stayed in his workshop. Then I had the pleasure of being a...

My first engraved watch (in progress)

Just engrave it. Go hard and make sure you finish it. Don’t be afraid to make a good job……..or a bad one!!! From that experience you will soon start realising that what you think will work……..may, or may not work in practice. Don’t bother trying to cut it on a practice plate as the metal and...

    Metal inlays in wood

Pinning it at the back also helps. You can contour the metal slightly by bending it. Make it slightly thicker than you want and sand the metal inlay down to the wood.........just like a gold inlay. Choose your epoxy wisely...........Get a good marine one not Araldite. Araldite is heat sensitive...

    Background

The bigger the area the flatter your background needs to be before stippling otherwise you can see variations in the stippling and they stick out like dogs balls!!! Small areas not so much. You can also punch your background to get an even surface for stippling. If you have variations in the...

Question: how do you finish a rolex?

I hear what you are saying with the burrs :) 800 grit for the burrs for the main cuts Followed by 1200 grit after shading cuts Do not use lubricant and back automotive grit paper up with something solid. Then green polishing paper rubbed over using fingers. You can then follow with blue and...
