What is a good printer setup for doing transfers on to metal?

I just purchased a cheap HP laser printer (Laser Jet MFP M140W) on Amazon for 150.00 or so, and the results are stunning using only acetone. So good I’m irritated I spent so much energy trying to perfect transfers using different varnishes and nail polishes. I was getting good results from...

What is a good printer setup for doing transfers on to metal?

Hello, I just got a 1255e off Amazon and won’t transfer using acetone. I was using an old Brother laser printer on acetate transferring with varnish, but the printer died and I need to figure out a new plan. I just did my first test with the 1255e and the included ink cartridge. Cleaned surface...

Engraving brass after practicing on steel

Thanks, I’m a firm believer in eliminating variables, which is why I only use a 120, for now. I sharpen it on a Graverhone with the Apex system the same way every time with a parallel heel, probably .25mm. More practice with softer metals…

Engraving brass after practicing on steel

Hello, I’ve been practicing and engraving on steel for a year or so now and have gotten pretty comfortable (unless there’s text lol). I just had to engrave on a brass sheet, and it did not go well. The brass sheet was good quality .125” rolled stock (not sure of the grade. it was left over...

    First Henry Rifle project

Hello, I’m starting my first Henry Rifle project and I’m wondering what the best ways to finish whatever metal this is. I would just call it pot metal but I’m sure it’s not technically…it’s white and non ferrous and customer service couldn’t tell me either. It has black enamel which I probably...

Magnum vs 901 hand piece face off

I have both the magnum and 901 and I love the 901. I rarely use the magnum. I found it very useful for applying a dot background with a beading tool installed, but the 901 does everything I need otherwise. Granted I’m a novice and only spend about an hour a day practicing lettering, shading, and...

    Practice plates

I’ve bee I just ordered some steel from McMaster Carr to practice on. I’ve been engraving brass so far and the one time I tried steel it cut surprisingly easy. the steel I ordered is called “high tolerance low carbon steel”. I’m sure there’s a local supplier.

    Dumb question: backhand vs forehand

Hey Sam, I’m rewatching your flare cut videos and wondered where your camera is situated. Are they recorded from your perspective or is the camera off to the side. I ask because I’m thinking about the angle I hold the graver. I do what’s comfortable and that usually has me steering it pretty...

    Hey, thanks a lot!

    Dumb question: backhand vs forehand

Okay, I figured it out. On a forehand cut the belly of the graver is on the inside of the arc, and on a backhand cut the belly is on the outside of the arc. I don’t know how much sense “forehand” makes to me, but “backhand“ is like pulling back on the stick if the graver was a little airplane.

    Dumb question: backhand vs forehand

Watching Sam’s flare cut videos and I don’t understand what distinguishes forehand and backhand cuts. At first I thought it was based on which side of your hand would be exposed when you roll the graver, but he labels the inside turn of the cuts forehand for both left and right curves. Is the...

    Work Station Organization

Maybe I’ll try a points down style for v2.0 with a hole for an m4 lug on the bottom to attach a clamp. The magnets don’t really do much anyway. The holder fits snugly enough on its own that if it was bumped hard enough to knock it off the magnets wouldn’t stop it.

    Work Station Organization

I decided to model my workstation in CAD to make a tool holder for 3D printing. It holds two hand pieces and 9 QC holders. There‘s also space underneath to glue in two magnets, but it clips in securely without them. I’ll Upload an STL to Thingiverse if anyone‘s interested, but it’s pretty...

After two weeks with the 901, then switching back to the Magnum, it’s like driving a Cadillac. Really hard to decide which one I like best.

    901 and Graversmith question

As someone who has always just shut off the propane and O2 without properly purging the regulators, I can see how this might seem like a bad one. I’ll try cleaning the handpiece. Actually returning the Graversmith and upgrading to the G8, so we’ll see if it persist.
