I found a nice book recently: The Acanthus Leaf, applied to the Various Styles. It was published in 1903 in New York, with 20 photos of original clay models representing a wide range of architectural periods and styles. The models were done by Herm. Lindenberg.

The quality is wonderful, so I thought the images might be helpful. I've scanned four of them, I'll try to scan others when I can steal the time. Here's the first batch.

Do you have these images in a larger format? Not being familiar with this site yet, I am not sure how or if I can blow the images up.
Tom, just click the thumbnail and a larger one will come up.

I've decided to scan all 20 and post them, a few at a time. This batch might not be as useful for engravers, but hang on... I'm doing them in sequence. Just wait till I get to the Renaissance and Florentine images!

Note the development through these three Moorish acanthus leaves- the core form and movement remains as they get more embellished.

Plates 13 through 16; French Renaissance and the three Louis's.

This should translate directly into engraving. If you do some work based on these images, I hope you'll post pix for us to see.

Here's the final four. Empire, Belgian Style, Modern Composition, and American Renaissance.

Use them in health.
