Background removal

I've recently noticed some engravers in videos removing and stippling the background before cutting the design outlines. Is there an advantage to this or is it merely personal preference.

Keith,I would like to see that video on background removing & stippling,how do you remove the background with out a design?don't sound right. J.J.

Removal of background is optional, if you do remove it, with a high speed bur or a flat, i would stipple it ro create an even background, just looks better.
Stippling also creates better adhesion if your filling it with pigment to darken the background.

I'm sorry I think I was mistaken. In the videos linked below It appeared to me that the engraver was removing the background and what was shown was the transfer lines instead of cut lines. Further reading comments to the videos I guess they are cut. That clears things up for me. Thanks for the input.
