I don't post my pieces often as I really can't compete with some of the fantastic work displayed on this forum. You guys rock!
So how about a little help and advice on how and what to improve or at least what to work on before I cut this out, polish and bend into a money clip? I know my scroll sucks. I have all the books but I just can't get my brain to control my pencil.
So, are the ears too pointy? Eye to bulging? Nose too flat?

What I think...

If you are still doing your work on nickel, I think it's long past time for you to to be moving up to silver. (or gold)

And charging more to cover the change in materials!

I believe you will like the way silver cuts...

You already know what needs fixin' - the way to accomplish that, is to do more of it.

the worlds' worst engraver will chime in here, john. all i would really do here is maybe texturize the background a bit, and lighten it up some to provide a more gentle contrast to the critter. the sculpting you did seems to highlight the natural physical nature of the deer. i think my idea would likely make the deer appear to be in a more natural looking background. deer are alway seen poking around in the weeds and similar background.

Brian:

I have done a very few in sterling. Unfortunately the clientele I'm dealing with can't afford the extra cost of the silver. The blank runs about $60 dollars and when I ad my $100 to $125 to it it puts it over the top for most folks. I really don't mind cutting German silver. It's kind of gummy and sometimes you hit a spot that's a bit "gritty", but for the most part it cuts OK. Maybe I've become used to it.

Monk:

I can't do much if anything to the background now as I relieved it to about .017. I'll keep your idea in mind when I cut another buck.

Don't beat yourself up too much over your scrolls. They are quite nice, with just a few areas that need tweaking. For instance, I would have made the tip of the bottom right leaf touch the edge of the picture frame, not stop just before it got there.

Deer looks nice. I think some of the lines in the hair are a little harsh and might look nicer softened, it is hair after all. Your eye looks like many I've done. I found if I make many short shallow cuts around the outline of the eye, it will make it softer. Softer will make it "bulge" (your word)" less.

Most importantly, if you are selling them to happy customer and you are enjoying it, it is perfect.
