If you are wanting a sand or shot filled pad/bag to rest your work on... simply go find a secondhand leather purse the right size and shape.

A zipper closure would be convenient. Fill a plastic bag with your sand or shot and put it inside the purse...

Now you have a sandbag. And you can still use it as a purse should you need to!

as mentioned you want the strength of leather. shot is heavier than sand, but is more conformable to items. leave a bit of free space if you make one, you don't want to totally fill the bag.
