My left leg is tired

does it matter if its a chair or stool or wooden log or is there a way to make it easier for standing engraving . i think sitting will be much more comfortable though.

Some potters adjustable stools lean forward ... is this the same with engraving . thanks .

your body is unique. so is the way you sit or stand. whether a chair, stool, bench- whatever, it should be adjustable. a combination that is good for me, may not work for you. one way that works for all-- you must be comfortable when engraving-- standing or seated. you have to "tune" the equipment to please your body, not the other way around.
neck pain, shoulder, back, and cramps will likely result if you work outside your comfort zone. be mindful of lighting, that can cause eye strain. unfortunately, it takes quite a bit of time to assemble a bench, a vise, lighting, & seating so all is in harmony. check sams' thread on "workbenches". many will show just how each is "tuned" to meet the individual needs of the engraver.

The best thing I have found is an adjustable height stool with a solo Harley seat on it.

Just because I have an old iron tractor seat bolted to a creamery can don't make me a redneck.
Surprisingly it is very comfortable and forces good posture.
If I could mount my saddle without tearing it up, I would. Now there is comfort !

As Monk said, "Your body is unique", and, there is no answer to this question. Each chair is a 'signature' model, with its own ergonomics just for you. Manufacturers try to make infinitely adjustable models to take in all possibilities, but it's impossible. If they'd ever succeed, they couldn't make enough chairs to sell. Lumbar support, quality materials, infinite adjustment, armrests, and so on are something that must be considered so as not to cramp pressure points. The list goes on and on. You're only solution is to sit in each and every chair out there, with adjustments, that you can find, and hope that you get lucky. Also, don't look for one you intend to sit in all day, as you have to get up and walk around once in a while. Your bench also has to be built with you in mind. Good luck!

They do what they call saddle chairs. Surgeons use them for sitting long periods of time. The seat is much like the Harley seat that was mentioned. You can use your saddle by just making a saddle stand for it to set on at height you like or possible make it adjustable. Thats what I was going to do if I hadn't found a saddle seat at a yard sale.

Rod,
I can see chips getting into the sheepskin and eventually working through my saddle blanket to embed themselves into my stick's hide.
Those saddle seats were disCUSSED recently and if I was to go that route, there is a split seat, swing chair that is supposed to alleviate going numb. But, at $1,250 shipped, no thanks.
Besides, my tractor seat is comfortable and doesn't require a lot of space.

There are a couple bicycle seats that looks like it would work if you have a base. The Micargi with a backrest looks pretty good and it's about $50....

The surgeon's saddle chair, mentioned earlier, was the one Bruce Beebe was sitting in on page 16 of the first American Engravers book, but you can't see the chair. I was at his place when he was doing the lion on the scale you see at the bottom of the photo. From what little I recall, it was on a swing-arm affair of some kind, and had some adjustments. Sometime, if you befriend the right people at the local hospitals, they update their equipment, and goodies can be obtained at a reasonable cost. Especially, some lighting fixtures. Locally, things have changed, but maybe you can get lucky to wade in and get what you need. It's worth a try.
