I do like what you did, the effect is very good.
I think engrave animal need as much as possible to be realistic, in nature you will rarely see such a well define periphery, since squirrels have hair the perimeter definition is not a hard line but some what fuzzy. It is very tempting to engrave individual hair but once again it is not the way one would see the subject at a distance. If you look at a squirrel 100 feet away (to be about the size it is on the engrave piece) you are not going to see individual hair, the only thing you will see are shadows and reflection, the hairs are lost with the distance. Should you want to create texture dots would be more appropriate than line and more in proportion with the model.
