Somewhere I recently read that one of the Cafe members or one of Lindsay's Forum members mentioned being happy with a Micro-Pro rotary tool for background removal. For anyone interested in that, I found a supplier that sells it for $299.95 with free shipping. Most other suppliers are in the $370 + shipping ballpark.

Supplier is: ArtWood Designs, Rt 62 & Pyott Rd.,
Algonquin, IL
Phone 847 516 0154
website is www.artwooddesigns.com

hope that helps someone save a buck or two.....alf

Twas me
thats a better deal than i got from the guy who makes the darn things
He zipped me for the shipping.

It's a nice unit
be sure you get a face shield on
Unlike air tools this puppy will really throw metal into your face and hurt you.
Ask me how i know!

Yes I have one.

Got it to fill the gap i needed from the mini 12k to the 30k work horses.

I wanted something higher speed with some torque to do gunstocks along with ivory and stone work and some minimal background work. I don't get this gadget to do coin work, it's a little fast for that stuff.

Having choked on volume of air required to do dip and dab work at 400k and the prices of NSK and others went looking to see what fish and bird carvers were using.

This unit came back highly recommended and so acquired one. It's well machined, no wobbles. I can chuck many different sizes of tools without ever looking for a darn wrench which is wonderful. The hand piece is comfy. @7oz and easy to control foot pedal or dial option and forward and reverse. Good for left hand work - screwy wood grain issues or just for throwing particals the other direction.

Diamonds and carbides do not hang up. It vaporizes metal wood etc - there in is the catch. These little pieces of metal powder come off at around 75 mph plus and they will give you fits if you dont wear a face shield - i would also think they would wreak havok to the objective of a scope in a short time - so a protective lense is a good idea or at minimum some plex between the scope and vise.

Currently I am building installing vacum dust catcher metal sucker to protect myself. Not that this isnt an issue with 30k larger units it just seems that they never gave me a 3 day stint of pain like a good sunburn as this one does with metal. As far as wood goes it vaporizes it down to a size where health becomes a serious issue and heppa filters are a requirement 1 to 3 micron size stuff goes deep in the lungs. Ivory dust at that size finds it's way into the eyes and swells up to make glue, metal rips the eyeballs and wood makes everything burn plus other issues. Heck, everything i carve will in essence collectively kill you.

the story i got from a lot of different carvers was that considering the runout of a 400-450k unit it made about the same tool to subject contact as a smooth 50k. I am not a machinist so I dont know if it's bs or not but so far a couple of the guys who are on the other forums have recently bought the units and are saying good things too. So i guess it was a good move - granted there may be better ones out there but not that i could find in this price range. I have a feeling there are only two or three companies who make the actual handpieces for all the upper end units and this is one of the top companies i am told. not sure if they speak english or not.

You can find similar gadgets that look a lot like nsk and this beastie under chinese dental for 45 bucks a pop but you have to order a million of them. Or you can buy the foredom for 1089.00 that does the same thing but with only one collet.....

I think there is a huge markup somewhere that they dont tell us about!

I can write my name in script in black walnut without a glitch which is something I cant do on paper with a pencil!

I will have more to offer later as I have some projects coming up in metal wood and ivory and will be taking pictures. But for now I would have to say its a winner. I may buy another and just have it be a discrete unit for 1/16th. At present I am using the nesting slide in collets but they show no issues under the scope as far as vibration or goobers - prescision work should not be an issue. It also blows air out the front so if one is careful a mister could be employed for gem work if you keep the nose down.

For now all i can say is i love it. It's a very nice toy.
hope that helps

Hello Coincutter, when you are carving and sculpturing metal with your rotary tool. What stones do you use and where do you buy them for polishing the work after you have roughed it out with the cutters. Please give us a complete run down on the tools and stones you use to get to the finished product.
As well as the rpm of hand piece.
