Hi,
I just joined the forum. I am retired and always found the idea of hand engraving on watches or jewelry interesting so am looking for any advice on what I need to get started without breaking the bank.

Your first move should be to go through the archives and look for others who have asked this same question. Not to be mean, but we have answered this question a lot! Welcome to the forum. Please use it as much as possible. The knowledge you seek is already here.

My advice would be not to do watches, jewelry or knives until you have quite a few practice plates that you are happy with.
Engraving is only the second half of the process - designing and drawing come first.

After doing some homework, find somebody in your area, Vancouver, I believe, and go visit. Beg them to teach you, and then gift them their favorite tea, wine, beer, chocolate, whatever. Most of these guys are very accommodating with information and help of all kinds, if they think you're serious. Do some homework first, like the others have said. Just about any question you have will have been answered on here already, so look around, and then look around some more. Once you do that, watch a million videos, and then go visit, because there is nothing like seeing in person and getting a seat in the chair for a few minutes.
