cross hatching is one way, see some pen drawings, by intersecting lines in diffrent angles you create dark areas.

Here are some examples, I've used cross hatching and stipple methods.

The images that you see of Italian puntini (dot bulino) engraving in books and magazines do not give an accurate representation of the actual piece. It is all in the lighting of the image. When you look at an actual piece you will have to twist and turn it in the light until the light hits it just right to achieve the hard contrast that you expect. The top masters do not ink in their cuts.

All of this is different from the the bank note style where hatching and cross hatching are used to create the image. In that case the cuts are often blackened in.

The term bulino engraving is thrown around in books, magazines, and forums, often, without a clear understanding of the term. Bulino is simply the Italian word for burin, so anything engraved with a burin could be "bulino" engraving. What most people are referring to when they say bulino is puntini which is made up entirely of tiny dots.

Go to this link for more explanation of bank note, bulino, and burin: http://www.engravingglossary.com/Hand Engraving Glossary B.htm

For those who seek to execute the kind of images done by Firmo and Francesca Fracassi, expect to place several hundred dots within each square centimeter. This is very slow work and very few engravers have the clientele to pay for the hundreds of hours required for even a knife engraving. The bank note style can be done much faster (though it is not fast work) and often times looks better to the naked eye than the dot bulino. It is also not as fragile to handle.

Bravo, Roger! Well explained. I literally could not have said it better. In fact, I could not have said it as well. Hopefully the confusion will decrease from this day on!
