It's my understanding that properly drawn scrolls should touch the borders of the piece. My problem is sometimes my attempt at round scrolls inside an irregular shape don't always touch the borders, I usually add more foliage to make up for it and fill some space. Do I just need to spend more time at the drawing board or is there a legitimate problem dealing within given geometrical restrictions?/Users/dgibson/Desktop/IMG_1608.JPG

I draw as precise as I can with light scribe marks, cut the borders first and then start each scroll with the tool coming out of the border cuts, in both directions. Try a few on practice plates.

No need to always touch the borders but be consistent with it. You want to avoid having some areas with scrolls filling the entire space out to the borders, and others with scrolls floating in space. Try to have all the elements the same distance from the border whether that is a 1/16" away or actually touching. Whatever the choice it should be because it was a chosen as an overall design theme, not because that's where things just fell out. Time with the pencil is well spent.

Hello Dave, I've learned alot from Lee Grirfiths book on Design Fundamentals. The chapter is on Border Treatments and he explanes how your drawings can kiss the border, overrun/shortfall the border or even disappear into the border. Great ideas on borders and has helped me alot on my design drawings. I live about 30 miles from you, maybe we can get together for coffee & shop talk.......JohnR

Good advice Layne, part of my problem is sometimes they look like they look like they just fell there.
JohnR, yes I'd enjoy getting together with you, I go to Stockton usually a few times a month, I may have business there this Sun. I occasionally work tattooing near dtn., Pershing exit from I-5.
I'll PM my ph.#
