If I wanted to give a three dimentional look as if one scroll was passing over another, once you take the material away from each side of the scroll, how do you get it smooth enough to shade again. flat graver until it is close.... what is the next step?

thanks

Hi Smays

Not sure if you are actually sculpting/modelling or trying to give the appearance of 3 dimensions by shading with cuts.

If you are shading with cuts you are in effect creating a shadow behind the overlapping scroll. So you make some fine cuts on both sides of the bottom scroll. You don't actually remove any material.

If it is a directional shadow then shade one side of the overlap more than the other.

If you are sculpting/modelling then you do remove material from the underneath scroll but give it a good lead in and lead out instead of a sudden drop.

Hope that all makes sense. If not, I'll draw you a picture and post it on this thread.

Cheers
Andrew
