I am interested in doing some coin carving and I have a host of questions, but I think that a lot of them will be answered via trial and error. I am curious, though, about signing your work on a coin. Where and how is a coin signed by the engraver/carver. I assume just initials or maker's mark of some sort, but where do you put it?

On another vein, I only recently learned, stupid me, that our host is a renown coin cutter whose work is highly prized. I don't remember ever seeing Sam post or show any of his coin cutting work and would love to see some. I'm sure it would be an inspiration to any of us aspiring to learn this art form.

Most coin carvers sign and number their work and most collectors want them signed and numbered..I sign and number all my coin carvings that have a smooth edge on the edge, those that don,t have a smooth edge, i sign and number them where it looks best, a lot of the times on the collar of the clothing of the subject..

I sign mine on the reverse under the buffalos head.
If its a reverse carving I sign in the front near the date. Some are on the edge of the coin. Just my initials. It really doesnt matter where just as long as its signed.
Have fun carving and please post some photos.
Good Luck... Keith
