After meeting many of you folks at the Grand Masters, I decided I'm gonna try not to be so shy and participate little more on the forum.

This is my latest carving. It's a 1934 Buffalo Nickel I was commissioned to transform into child actor legend Shiley Temple. Comments and critiques welcome.

why the heck would you be shy ? this is a more than fabulous piece. flawless , i'd say ! and the fact that it's a likeness as well, just beautiful. the lettering is great around the rim, too. cant say enough about this very beautiful work.

Amy, Great work.Thanks for sharing.
(Maybe you could engrave one with a Boston Red Sox theme)
I'm gonna try engraving a nickle one day......

Question:
Does it matter if it is an older nickle or not?
It seems as if all the nickle carvers prefer the old coins.

Brian,
One of the first nickels I ever carved was a Boston Red Sox theme. In October of 2004 I was in Emporia KS. taking a Bulino Class. At the same time the Red Sox were in the World Series.( As you know we sign up for these classes months in advance). I sat next to a great guy who was a Hobo Nickel carver. He talked MUCH about nickels. Well, The Red Sox won the World Series that year after 86 years and I decided to carve this nickel! The carving was done on a 1918 Buffalo Nickel (the last time the Red Sox Won the World Series prior to 2004)
I named it Curse Reverse in honor of The Bambino curse being broken.

I have only carved on the old Buffalo Nickels. Most collectors prefer the old nickels. Some guys have carved on modern nickels, but I haven't yet.

Amy, That's a great story to go with your carving. I love the interwoven themes with the dates of the nickles and the Sox' 1918 World Series victory....That would delight a true Red Sox fan.
I do believe the Bambino curse is gone.

Thanks again!

Hi Amy,
I am glad to see you finally got around to posting
Your coins look great as always.
I think you will be happier staying withthe old ones
the metal is nicer to work with and histercally speaking they have more historical
attraction as you know.

Take care, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
