A #36 and #42 hand push flat graver and toothpick..I,ll try and draw out how I do it and send it to you..

No, it,s not a dumb question, I lay it on the coin and use it as leverage for my graver..You can shave the letters off the coin and not dig in..I do not use a heel on my graver when I do this.

It might take you a few mins. to get used to the no heel, but it works good for me, don,t try to take a lot off at a time..After a little practice you can have your nickel smoothed down in 30 mins. or less..Also sanding sticks.... [ Gesswein # 107-3606 ] really give you a smooth surface after you remove letters..
