Many years ago I saw several handguns that were engraved by Ben Shostle. His style of engraving was a beautiful sculptured carving. And I say carving because it looked like he scooped out the metal as one would while wood carving. I have always wanted to learn how he did it and what tools he used? If anyone knows his secrets I would like to know.

I'm not sure if I can tell you all but one time he did a seminar before we taped them. I knew Ben and he was quite a fellow. Most of that work was done with little if any layout and then he just "attacked" the metal with a Gravermax. I know he used squares with unusually long heels and some rounds and just went at it. That's all easy to say but he just had a knack for it. He produced good looking work fast and at a reasonable price. He never claimed they were "museum" work but they did have a look that was his own.
