Mitch,

Bare metal, then apply Chinese white

Rod

what make & model Chinese White? over the years i've tried a few and been extremely disappointed in their adhesion. off the top of my head, i've used Winsor & Newton cake, Grumbacher, and also tried W&N white gouache, all in the lightest smear possible for minimal coating thickness. "tenacious" is not the term of art i'd use to describe any so far...

Mitch,

I use a shellac mixture, laser and parchment, burnish, hairspray. Does not chip and removes easily with alcohol.

All can say is Mike Dubber's wife must have magic in her mouth. Assuming he kisses her from time to time he gets Chinese White to stick without even thinking about it. I have tried everything. I just have bad spit. Maybe she could kiss the little bricks and then sell them-It could work!!! A smaller fee for a recharge from time to time. Fred

i forget how i made it, but mike cirelli had a formula that worked pretty well for inkjet. my hp printer, # 92 black, will print well directly on glass, metal, and most anything one would want. the cirelli "sauce", as i call it, i added "touches" of all kind of stuff to it -- including just a small amount of white tempera.
mitch: make about a pint of the stuff you're currently using. then use that as a base for making small quantities . to the smaller batches add different things, such as mod podge, write down all that you do. eventually, you will find just the right stuff.

http://www.engraverscafe.com/showthread.php?2499-Transfer-solution-for-inkjets-by-Cirelli&highlight=cirelli+sauce

1. Solution 75 to 80 % Synthetic Isoparaffinic Hydrocarbon (Zippo new formula lighter fluid) and 20 to 25 % Dammar varnish

2. Inkjet printer your choice (may not work)

3. Transfer sheets , I used two different 3m types and they worked fine) a little tip is to clean the smooth side with lighter fluid before burnishing and you won’t get a waxy sticky build up when you burnish.

Mitch,

I regret that I am late in getting back to you about Chinese White, we stayed on longer than expected in L A.

The brand of Chinese white I have been using was in a small tube, and cost me about $6. Eventually I cut the top off the tube so I could easily wet a finger and take a smear from the exposed white, which, left open to the air, turned into a harder powdery solid, and readily became paste-like on the wet fingertip, and easily smeared onto metal, quickly driying to a tenacious surface you can draw on, is pretty difficult to get off, even with acetone, yet readily wipes off with water. For me it works well for transfer adherence. I add two pictures of my tube with the name. Searching online to the company who makes it, I see they do not advertize individual tubes, but say these are now available as a small kit of colors including white. Amazon.com offers the kit, see this link.

I trust it is the exact same mix, because my old tube works well for us engravers.

best

Rod

thanks for posting this for everyone, Rod. for some odd reason, probably due to my execrable computer karma, the link in your PM wouldn't work, but this one does. i have not tried that brand. which is surprising, because i could probably stock a small art supply store. recently i've begun clearing out piles of stuff that hasn't been used in years and my wife offered a co-worker's young daughter 'some colored pencils'. her eyes bugged out when she received a large coffee can pretty much packed full (and no, she didn't get anywhere near all of my colored pencils...) and a few huge pads of paper.
