Trip up the road to GRS

Hi,

Sorry I've been quiet lately, I have been checking in and reading posts though.

Around the first of May I am going up to GRS to take a beginner class with Rex Pedersen.

Because I wear a prosthetic on my right arm I was a little concerned that I might have difficulty moving the turntable / vise.

I emailed Sam and he got me in contact Rex. Rex suggested that I go up and visit GRS and try out the setup. He contacted GRS and set up a visit for me.

I finally managed to get a bit of time off from work today and got up there. Not only did they help me understand the relationship between the scope and vise, they adjusted things around until I was satisfied that everything would work Ok come class time.

In addition, Delwin, a guy out in the shop had a kick wheel adapted over to their turntable setup already fabricated and ready for me to try. I don't think I'll need it but it will be there as a backup in case I do.

Many thanks to Sam, Rex, and the team up at GRS. Especially Stephanie.

This is second time they have gone above and beyond great customer service for me.

All of you went the extra mile and I appreciate that.

Most folks with disabilities would rather take a beating than ask for help.

This was one of those times that I needed help and you have no idea how much I appreciate that.

Tell the folks at GRS when you see them that it was much appreciated!

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,
Glad to hear things worked out good for you. I figured the gurus in the shop could figure out something if not.
Look forward to meeting you!

Hi all. I just joined this group so please bear with me. My name is Delwin and I'm the one Matt referred to in his post. The people in the office asked me to look into this problem and I attempted to help. My design wasn't anything special, but I hoped that it would help. I did later hear that Matt didn't need it after all. I'm glad he did so well. I'm not an engraver but I love to help design and fabricate things. I joined this forum to learn what problems are out there and see if there is anything I can design that will help. If you have any suggestions for me, please let me know. Two things that I will be working on is a stand alone, adjustable turntable and an improved, no maintenance turntable.

i have long been fascinated by the concept of operating the vise with a foot wheel. did you actually give this a try ? if so, how smoothy could you adjust the vice turning to match your cutting ? i would think it quite awkward, and would take a very long time to acclimate to this technique.

Neil Hartliep, in his book The Basics Of Firearms Engraving shows you some basic plans for this type of foot operation.

I used it when I first go started with hammer and chisel...............and I have to say it works pretty well and doesn't take a lot of getting used to. You get into the rhythm of it fairly quickly.

Cheers
Andrew
