do a thousand or so. lots of practice needed to not only get good, but to feel comfortable about doing it. with practice, one learns to do the designing without much thinking about it. one day, the stuff just seems to come out of the pencil. this is what you want to achieve imho.
Your theory there is all pretty good. When I started I didn't pay attention to leaving a healthy amount of backbone on my scrolls... then when you go shading and taking out background and constantly nicking your original lines you end up with no backbone whatsover in bits and you lost the clear image you're (probably) after Cross hatching too heavily is really bad for doing that... good fine cross hatching is hard to do without a scope I find. If your point enters the metal part way down the side wall of your cuts you'll end up with a horribly thick line that pretty well ruins your entire piece. Wow that was off topic, just had to get that off my chest. I'll post a picture in a minute of something else that's (ONE WAY) you COULD alter it slightly IF YOU WANT TO.
You're doing well... as Monk said, do a thousand more... just draw like crazy. Mr Squiggle random shapes all over your page and then try to find the most attractive way to fill them with awesome designs... start with just backbones, think about where you'd like overlapping scrolls and the order of different leaves, what scrolls and leaves should go on top of others... etc etc etc. Go mad, colour in some yellow bits where you'd like to see inlay.
I thank the kindness and for their time.I try to do my best and I think the simple things well has value. this makes the slow but solid learning. Make hundreds of drawings that is the way. I possess the tools follow the same premise, are those that I am able to use.

i think our landlord once said a simple but well executed design is better than a poor, more complex design that's well done. it's all a matter of practice. no tool or course of instruction does much good without practice.
