Hello all,

Currently I'm taking Basic Engraving course in Anwerpen, Belgium taught by Sam. Today our third day ended and I must say that I really-really enjoy it, too bad it lasts only 5 days. Nice place, very interesting subject, cool people and so on.

Todays topic was script lettering and with many encouraging words from Sam I post my first attempt on it. All comments, suggestions and critique is welcome. I must add that I've engraved only about 30 hours and that this piece is far from perfect (even now I found that I have one line missing from 'r').

Big kudos to Sam for teaching us!
Viljo

For 30hrs you did very good, I've not had Sam's class but after meeting him at Scotts I was impressed Sam and with his ability to instruct and teach us how to take Photo of our work...
Good luck

You certainly have 'bragging rights' on your first attempt at script lettering. Bravo, Viljo!

Looks good!

And it's only a little line! :p

Actually it shows just how much your mind's eye fills in when you look at things.

.....and this is your first attempt. WOW! It looks beautiful!! This is my first post - just joined the Cafe - and yours was the first message I read. Keep up the good work. Sam is an awesome instructor - I'm sure you agree with that statement. You're gonna just keep getting better and better from this point on in your work. Very proud of you.

We know you have an excellent teacher - you must also be an excellent student. The lettering is very good for the small amount of time you've been at this. Congratulations and have a great time with the class.

Wow! Thank you guys so much for good comments! After reading all this I must admit I do feel little proud of that engraving ;). I guess I don't need to look at that so much under microscope, then it looks prettier.

First try on relief engraving

So today our 4th day of Basic Engraving Class ended, main topic was relief engraving. As Sam hoped, or because he said it, I'll post my first attempt on it. I started from the top right hand, then did bottom right and last one was top left hand 'hole'. I think you can see the progress as I learned how to do this stuff. I must say I really-really like this kind of engraving and the effect it creates.

Now I have to figure out how to do cross-hatching normally and actually all shading, first tries are... well... let's just say it takes practice :)

P.S. The design was created by Sam

Tira, I'm about to marry off the youngest & last one here in a few months, the oldest just had a our first grandbaby, & we just found out the middle one is pregnant and due around the first of the year. Those three out of the way, The most beautiful woman in the world, says my paycheck is her's so if I want to do anything it'll have to come out of my knife shop and engraving. All I can say is that I'm going to try to be more diligent at saving and try to go as soon as I can. I've always admired Sam's engraving and have been for the past, at least 10 yrs and want to attend his class when possible. If anyone has any scholarships out there that I don't know about, just holler :D also if you have any other plans on prying money from those little hands let me know, I do enjoy this forum, Dwayne
