"These are doodles I suppose , I do them sitting in my armchair while watching T V . It's like doing a crossword puzzle , keeping the mind alert , and fun too"

"Some ways of sharpening a graver without a jig , in the time fashion way .All engravers did it this way until harder steel gravers needed diamond honing . For softer metals these extra hard tools are unnecessary .I have made tools from fencing foils tempered in motor oil . Those were the days you had to get a straw color temper to all new tools so they wouldn't snap off the tip"

Thank you for sharing these, I am new to the site and clearly, but I can dream thanks to several here who are encouraging. Life can do bad things to good people sometimes. but as long as their are people like the ones I have met on this site. Hope and dreams can never fade. Thank you for inspiring. I don't even have tools yet and all I can do is draw and dream. Soon....... I will catch something not sold,
Happy new year to everyone, lets hope it exceeds our dreams, and gives hope to those who are without.

"I was asked how I drew out scroll . Here is the early skeleton ,from there I let my imagination fill in and balance the negative spaces as well as the "foliage ". More to come."

This is awesome, so did you just start doing this doodling. I mean did you sit and plan to draw out the skeleton and then add in the embellishment. Or was it in your mind and you just drew out what you saw and felt.? Or was this design something that you had planned when you started it. I suppose an artist would reel the same thing as a musician? I don't know what the word is for it, but when we get caught in the moment and for just a little while there is nothing but us and what we are doing. Pre 2010 and an auto immune disease, my passion was music, If I had just a piece of music in my head I could feel where to go from there, or I may have just sat and felt something and worked at it until I had what I was feeling worked out. I do hope that I can do this, I am still in the which direction do I go phase, and taking it slow. I Have been going through pencils, I haven't found tools to work with as of yet, but Have I ever went through some lead. ha ha. it will be worth the wait. And seeing work like this gives me inspiration to keep pushing,
Thank you for sharing

"English smallscroll & flowers by Kell workshop ;compare this with what is being engrave today on guns over 100,000 Pounds Sterling , I shudder ! This is how a best gun should look ."

"The#scorper & graver as in my demo drawing were used for the lettering"

"here is the lay out for a bouquet of flowers as put on with smallscroll ,the should be done with feeling not a mechanical robotic bunch .I have seen some bad stuff put on expensive guns where there is no excuse for cheap shoddy engraving . On cheap guns I will always excuse an engraver because he isn't getting a good price & isn't allowed to improve , there again I' ve seen some good work on low priced guns !"

"here is another tip ; the centre buffalo is traced out on clear plastic ,ie like packaging ,but don't use too thicker stuff . With a sharp scriber or pin , scratch your out line , put location lines if you want .rub soft graphite pencil over to fill in the scratch ,take tape as in my other demo , pull off a print ,place over prepared surface and lightly rub down . Ideal for curved surface where a flat piece is awkward . The clear plastic has been used by engravers for ages known as acetate ; printed down onto a surface rolled over with plastercine or beeswax ,but my method if done correctly is more permanent .it is good for locating over carving etc . The picture is a bit vague but I hope you novices take in what I intend .
Top;sticky tape .centre plastic. Bottom print off ."

"A slip with the point breaking or a mistake can leave an unwanted mark to get rid of these follow this helpful tip . I thought all engravers knew this ,until I have a class at GRS , an was praised by all saying just that tip was worth the fee ! Hope you feel the same ."

" I have noticed on inspection of some scroll engraving on guns etc , that some of the interior work is badly finished , maybe a few pointers will help .lack of good teaching is a handicap , so look at as many pics as you can find . Trying to put as many On as I can."

I repeat, all of this gathered into a nice book would be a great addition to almost any engraver's library.

A question on Mr. Hunt's method for fixing a gash: am I correct in assuming that he's saying you pop a set of burrs in the gash and then tap down / smooth out the area? Or...?
