Hello,
I have a friend who needs to upgrade his GRS-GraverMax hand piece to do Western Bright Cutting. We are looking at either the Magnum palm knob 004-940 or the Maestro MX 004-905. As I know little about Western Bright Cutting I hope some one who does will chime in and help us out.
Thanks in advance.

It depends on what he plans to cut if it's silver the 901 will do if it's Spurs , you need to heavier one, I personally like the feel of the maestro

I use the magnum for almost everything. You just push on the pedal less to make fine cuts, but you always have the power you need to drive through the hard stuff.

Thanks for your help

Hello Everyone,

More information, my friend is a bit and spur maker and would not be limited to engraving just the silver inlays. His wore out hand piece in not working in the steel.
It will be a foot control hand piece.

New question. The magnum comes in two shapes, a Palm knob [004-940] and the Oval [004-940-oval], for ending the bright cut by popping the graver out would the longer [oval] hand piece be better?

For the heaviest cutting would the Maestro MX be the best? Is the Maestro line something new or does it predate the Magnums? We are looking at the largest Maestro MX.

Thanks again for your help.

I am not a bit and spur guy but I am very familiar with the handpieces. The oval knob is made for that and many bit and spur people prefer it. Many of them have been using the old 701 model and got used to holding it that way and have more leverage for popping the big chips. I was hoping Diane would jump in on this but I think she uses the oval. The Maestro line short story is the 3 handpieces with a different shape. The intent of them is to be used more for stippling and other uses. I would choose the Magnum over a Maestro for the use you describe.

Thanks Rex, looks like the oval Magnum is the winner.
So many hand-pieces, so little time!
Thanks to all that responded to my question.
