Procreate Brushes for Engraving Designs

Hi folks. I'm in the very early days of learning to do hand engraving. Back in the 80's and 90's I was a jeweler/goldsmith and always wanted to learn but it's not been until recently that I had the time/money/desire to fully invest in the equipment needed to engrave. As part of the design process I've been drawing in Procreate, and tracing some of the really great designs I see posted in this forum. But I've had a hard time recreating the detailed strokes that appear to be required for the shading.

My question then is if anyone has a set of Procreate brushes they could share, which are suited for the engraving designs that we are producing? It seems to me that about a year ago I saw some reference to Sam Alfano sharing his brush sets, but I've searched the forums and have not had any success in finding that post.

I've never tried to share brushes. I know that there is a "share" button on the brush slider but I don't know how to get them to you. I would need your email address. If you want to send me a Private Message through the Forum with your email, I will try to send the brushes I use most often when designing engraving projects.

Nothing better than learning how to use a pencil to draw! Remember the graver functions as a potentially accurate extension of a pencil, placed in an educated engravers hand, used in disciplined conjunction with the intuitive feel that comes from a well-trained eye, that recognizes good design, and makes the necessary graphic adjustments, that are best realized by good sound judgment, acquired through critical-visual artistic wisdom, only acquired by practice and experience! Don't become too dependent on computer drawing programs!

I totally agree with your premise that learning to draw is the best road to becoming a competent engraver. Having worked with pencils and ink my entire life, I feel confident in their usage. However, I must comment on your statement about becoming dependent on computer drawing programs. You are correct that they do not teach one how to do proper design or train muscle memory. But please understand that the Procreate app is NOT a "computer drawing program". It cannot draw a scroll pattern. It is merely "digital paper". You must do all the drawing with the Apple pencil. Yes, the program can smooth out jagged lines but their placement is the important thing. I do not feel that using Procreate will hinder anyone from becoming a fine artist. If anything, as Sam once said, he is drawing more now because its so much fun on the iPad.
