Hello everyone! New here and just looking to see if anyone is from the New Jersey state area who would like to possibly help me get started in the right direction for engraving. Would need assistance on purchasing the basic tools needed for hand engraving and to also give me a steer as to how to take the plunge into the art. I might take a class at GRS to use as a spring board introduction into engraving. Thanks everyone, take care.

My suggestion would be to take the class at GRS first.
If you dont like it (the engraving business) then you didn't spend money on tools.
If you do like it the folks at GRS can tell you what you need. And you can buy from them directly.

well, mr kid-- welcome. you're in for a fantastic life-changing journey or a dead end street. either way, it will be your choice. good luck to you. before dropping a dime, you may want to check out your drawing skills. such skills will be a requisite to becoming proficient at this art.

I am a beginner engraver and completed a very worthwhile class with JJ Roberts, JJ Roberts School of Artistic Engraving. While JJ gave me a brief introduction to the traditional hammer & chisel & hand push gravers at my request I was really interested in the Lindsay Air gravers. JJ did a great job describing and demonstrating engraving techniques and I got to try several Lindsay Air Gravers including the Palm Control air graver. JJ not only demonstrated the proper techniques for engraving but also the proper techniques for using the Lindsay tools for sharpening gravers. JJ shared some valuable lessons learned over decades of experience and was very free with his information. The class surpassed my expectations and it was my good luck to learn from a world-class engraver.

Thanks Bguilmain, I am so glad to hear you had a very good experience with JJ Roberts. The lessons you mentioned are the exact lessons I would like to be schooled on. He is pretty close to where I live too. A weekend course might be the path for me to follow. Will keep you in the loop, again, thanks everyone for all the guidance and info for an aspiring novice, Californiakid.

Might want to call JJ Roberts in Virginia. He has all the tools and gives instruction. That way you will be able to try different systems and make a more informed decision.
JJ is the best! I studied for a few days with him and learned so much!
