Reversing graver sharpener.

I recently purchased an Andu graver sharpening unit that rotates in a counter clockwise direction. My graver holding fixture (post, duel angle type) would work better if the sharpener would turn clockwise. It doesn't use a standard plug in to the motor but rather a "jack" type plug in so I don't know how to reverse the wiring. Any suggestions.

if it's a dc motor, simply reverse the two leads.not familiar with the andu. it could possibly be reversed inside the unit housing. ya gotta know watchur doin or ya can mess things up. try calling the supplier. they may have a fast answer.

I am perplexed by this issue. Why does your fixture not work the same with a platen that turns in either direction? I have one of the newer GRS GraverHones that will turn in either direction and it works great in either direction. Is there a problem with the fixture? Is it loose when used with a wheel turning in one direction?

Hey, thanks for the reply. The fixture is positioned on the right side of the post. I tried reversing it but the calibrations get all screwed up if I do that so my best alternative would be to simply reverse the rotation of the platen. The unit is pretty pricy so I don't want to screw it up by digging into it.

Thanks for the reply. My fixture is configured on the right side of the post and there is no reversing the platen. I tried switching the fixture around but it mess up the calibration. If I could get it to turn clockwise it would be much more conducive to good sharpening as the graver would lay straight away from the rotation instead of at an angle.

I looked at one of the Andu units on YouTube and noted that the back was marked as DC current. Do some research, but I think you should be able to reverse the wires leading to the switch or to the motor to change the direction of rotation.

Thanks for your answer. I finally gave up and took it to an electric motor shop. It's really not worth me trying to do it myself (which is my nature). I'll post the results.

My fixture also sits on the right side of the post, but that does not cause a problem. What fixture do you have? Can you post a photo of it in use?

Not all motors are easy to reverse rotation. For whatever reason, earlier GRS Powerhones turned CCW, which I always thought was backwards. I finally called the motor mfr and ordered the exact same model with CW rotation. I remember the gal telling me they only make the other kind for one company, and I said yeah, I know who that is and i want a replacement for one of their machines.
Then about five years ago I upgraded to a newer model that goes either direction.

Hi,
I believe the reach issue is because the disks are very small only 100MM or about 4" and the work surface is quite small. If you use a larger disk you have no work table.
The ones on the GRS I believe are 5"
The ones on the TW Designs machine are 6"
Thanks just my opinion on the reach issue

sometimes one must ( or should ) improvize. such makes life more interesting and a whole lots more productive. half the junk we use is improvised.

So I took the unit to an electric motor shop to no avail. He said it was to complex and expensive for him to try to reverse the motor.....so I rethought the problem. Upon examining the graver sharpening fixture I concluded that the downward angle would remain the same no matter which side of the post the graver clamp was situated. Long story short......I reversed the "sharpening" angle indicator (wheel) and it works just fine. It's a little harder to line up the angle with the indicator line of the framework because the degree marks are on the far side of the wheel instead of adjacent to the framework. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Ken,

I still use the drill press method for turning diamond discs, so you are ahead of me with your equipment. Using a post type fixture, I can swing my graver from about the 4 o’clock position on the disk to about the 7 o’clock position. At 4 o’clock the disk is feeding into the graver, and at 7 o’clock the disk is feeding away from the graver. If the disk rotation was reversed, I could still use the fixture to position the graver for the preferred feed direction. Is there something that prevents this with your setup?

With my graver holder on the left side of the post (disc turns counter clockwise) the graver is actually directly above the sharpening disc instead of off to the side. In this position I can sharpen my gravers directly "downstream" of the disc rotation which is optimal. Before switching my sharpening fixture to the left....the best angle I could get was about 45 - 50 degrees downstream. This always left the left side of the graver somewhat dull because of the grinding angle. I hope this makes sense.
